Abstract

1328700 Continuous casting CONCAST AG 14 Sept 1970 [16 Sept 1969] 43866/70 Heading B3F In a continuous casting process in which molten metal is fed to the mould 4 through a pipe 2 which has its outlet orifice submerged beneath the surface of the molten metal in the mould, the pipe is surrounded by a ring of refractory material 6 in the region where the pipe penetrates a layer of slag 5 floating on said molten metal surface. The ring 6 may float on the molten metal or it may be attached to the pipe 2, e.g. by screw threads. When constructed as a float, its upward and downward movement may be restricted by abutments on the pipe. Spare rings 6<SP>1</SP> and 6<SP>11</SP> may be mounted higher up the pipe and can be dropped into position if necessary. The purpose of the rings is to prevent erosion of the pipe by the slag 5.
