Abstract
1364756 Continuous casting UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO 9 Feb 1972 [19 April 1971] 5977/72 Heading B3F A mandrel M of circular cross-section is supported in an open-ended mould 10 while molten metal, such as Cu from a pan 40, is fed in, e.g. through a spout 42, to maintain a constant level L in the mould as a hollow billet is withdrawn. A fuzed-silica float 44 bears a valve 60 for closing the feed spout 42 and straddles both.a bridge 18 (which supports the mandrel M) and a top, fuzed-silica, sleeve 24 of the mandrel. This sleeve 24 for resisting oxide slag, and a lower, graphite sleeve 26 (tapered below a shoulder 36) are threaded on a long bolt 22 suspended from the bridge 18. Molten metal passes from an upper reservoir of the float through bottom passages 62 into the mould 10 which has a water jacket 11.
