Abstract

1338156 Casting ingots, foundry plant RHEINSTAHL GIESSEREI AG 16 July 1971 [16 July 1970] 33542/71 Heading B3F A method of casting elongated ingots of constant cross-section (for division to form billets of equal weight and size) comprises supplying molten metal e.g. steel through a central aperture 19 in the base of an ingot mould 1 into the mould 1 which is at least 2 metres in height, uniformly 250 mm in diameter and not divided along its longitudinal axis. The metal should be cast at as low a temperature as possible (e.g. steel at 1550-1585‹ C.) and the rising speed of the molten metal surface on the mould cavity should be from 10 to 80 cm. min<SP>-1</SP>. As shown in Fig. 3 the mould 1 is perched on the riser pipe 17 of a gas pressure casting machine 10 provided with a melt holder 11 with a sealed cover 12 and gas supply pipe 16 and a slide valve 20 to cut off metal flow to the mould. Alternatively the metal may be poured into a downsprue (7) having a runner opening at the mould base (6) into the mould cavity (Fig. 1, not shown). The mould 1 may be of several surmounted sections 2, 3, 4, the lowest section 2 being the smallest as it is subject to most wear and requires most frequent replacement. When casting large ingots the melt surface in the mould may be covered with heat-insulating powder. Foundry plant.-In order to facilitate cleaning and preparation of the mould a stairway and balcony (9) allowing access to the top of the mould may be provided (Fig. 2, not shown).
