Abstract

1325814 Water-jet propulsion TWIN DISC Inc 27 Sept 1971 [12 Oct 1970] 44826/71 Heading B7V A water-jet propulsion unit for a watercraft includes a water intake housing 4, pumps 8, 9 for receiving water from the housing and discharging it rearwardly, a nozzle N located rearwardly of the pumps and a nozzle housing 34 for rotatably supporting the nozzle on axis 42. Upper surface 37 and lower surface 38 of the nozzle are connected by side walls and converge together in a rearward direction to terminate in a rear portion which co-operates with the housing when the nozzle rotates thus varying the effective discharge area of the nozzle. Water discharged by the pumps acts on both upper and lower surfaces of the nozzle regardless of its position so as to maintain hydraulic balance of the nozzle. Side steering valves V 1 and V 2 are located ahead of nozzle N. The propulsion unit shown includes reversing mechanism RM which includes parts 60 and 61 which slide laterally on tracks 63, 64, thus producing good reversing and slowing-down action.
