Abstract

1325548 Vacuum chambers KODAK Ltd 26 Nov 1970 [1 Dec 1969] 58597/69 Heading FIX [Also in Divisions F2 and F4] A seal for use between two zones at different pressures when transporting material 14 (e.g. a web coated with liquid or adhesive) comprises a passageway 18 in communication with each of the two zones and means for transferring gas out of or into the passageway for progressively changing the gas pressure along the passageway from the pressure at one zone to the pressure at the other. As shown, the web 14 slides over a polished steel arcuate surface 13, preferably treated with P.T.F.E., into a vacuum chamber 11 and a clearance gap is maintained between the coated side of the web and a shoe 17. The shoe is adjustable and consists of ribs 19 and troughs 20 which are connected via radial apertures 21 and one or more manifolds 24 to one or more vacuum pump so as to reduce the pressure of the air travelling with the web through the passageway 18 progressively as the web passes successively past the troughs; the pressure drops may be controlled by use of valves or by pump or aperture adjustment. Rubber seals may be provided along the sides of the passageway 18 and the tips of the ribs 19 may be grooved. Alternatively, the surface 13 may be defined by a roller which is sealed in the wall of the vacuum chamber 11. When the web is coated on both sides, it is necessary to provide a flat passageway with a ribbed shoe mounted on both sides. In Fig.2 (not shown), a web of photographic material bearing a chilled undried hydrophilic colloid layer is transported into and out of a vacuum drying apparatus provided with heaters 26; the web may be chilled, if desired as it is transported by cooling the surface 13 with water circulation.
