Abstract

1388245 Coating webs AGFA-GEVAERT AG 27 July 1973 [3 Aug 1972] 35784/73 Heading D1L A cascade coater for applying liquid to the surface of a travelling sheet 1 comprises a coating head 2 having at least one delivery gap 6 for the liquid, an inclined flow plane 4 down which the liquid travels from the or each gap 6 and a backing roller 3 for transporting the sheet to contact the menisans 5 of liquid formed at the downstream end of the plane 4, the or each delivery gap 6 being fed with liquid under pressure from a supply pipe 10 via first and second pressure distributing chambers 9 and 8 respectively and the communicating gap 7 between the first and second chambers 9 and 8 having a cross-sectional area which is less than the cross-sectional area of the delivery gap 6. Preferably gap 7 is 5 to 10 times smaller than delivery gap 6. Typically the width S of the gap 6 is 1.5 to 5mm while the width s of the connecting gap 7 is 0.3 to 0.5mm. In an alternative embodiment [Fig. 3] the first pressure distributing chamber is formed by a pipe 12 disposed in and running the length of the second pressure distributing chamber 13. The pipe 12 has a plurality of downwardly facing bores 14 formed in its surface the total cross-sectional area of which is smaller than the cross-sectional area of the delivery gap 6. In order to minimise pressure drop along the length of pipe 12 the bores may be of equal diameter but spaced apart at intervals which decrease along the pipe from its inlet end; the bores may be evenly spaced but of increasing diameter along the pipe, or the spacing and diameters may be constant but selected so that there is a maximum drop in pressure of 5%.
