Abstract
1325434 Brushes for dynamo-electric machines INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO Ltd 11 Aug 1970 [14 Aug 1969] 40781/69 Heading H2A A current transfer brush 1 comprises a plurality of elements 4 each consisting of a refractory fibre 7, Fig. 2 (not shown), other than carbon, coated with metal. The fibre diameter is less than 12 x 10<SP>-6</SP> metre and the metal, which may be deposited by electroplating or vacuum deposition, has a thickness not greater than one tenth of the fibre diameter. The metal may be silver or an alloy of a noble metal, such as silver, and another metal, such as copper. The fibre material may be boron nitride or a metal oxide such as alumina. Alternatively glass fibre may be used. The elements 4 are held in contact by a metal casing 5. The brush combines high current density, e.g. 1000 amps/ inch<SP>2</SP> with a low rate of wear.
