Abstract
1,191,234. Current collectors in traction systems. INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO. Ltd. 3 March, 1969 [6 March, 1968], No. 10948/68. Heading B7L. [Also in Division H2] A brush for use with a continuous supply rail in a traction system comprises a plurality of carbon or graphite fibres 4 extending generally parallel to one another, there being individual coatings of a metallic film of electrically conducting material or at least some of the fibres at the end adjacent the contact surface of the brush. Preferably the coatings e.g. of silver or a silver-copper alloy, extend over the whole length of the fibres, these being held together by a metallic casing 5. Alternatively the fibres may be secured together by induction welding of their coatings at the end remote from the contact surface. The rail is made of a material having a lubricating effect, such as graphite or a metal-graphite composite, or of a noble metal such as silver or a silver-copper alloy, or of copper or steel, in which case a lubricant such as graphite or molybdenum disulphide is employed.
