Abstract

1325315 Seals HAWKER SIDDELEY AVIATION Ltd 18 Dec 1970 [18 Dec 1969] 61817/69 Heading F2B In a sealing assembly between relatively slidable members, e.g. inner and outer members 8, 9 of an aircraft undercarriage leg, comprising a primary seal ring 11 and a secondary seal ring 12 which is spaced from the primary seal and assumes the sealing function if the primary seal fails, a leakage passage 16 containing a spring loaded ball valve 19 leads from the space 17 between the seals to the exterior of the seal housing 13. The passage 16 is formed in a member 15 passing through an aperture 10 in the outer leg member 9 and screwed into the seal housing 13, the passage 16 being closable by a plug 21. In normal use, the passage is unplugged and, if leakage occurs past the primary seal 11 to the extent that the pressure in space 17 lifts the ball valve 19, hydraulic fluid leaks out and indicates that the primary seal requires renewal. The passage 16 is then closed by the plug 21 until such renewal is possible.
