Abstract
1325248 Powder metallurgical preparation of alloys CHROMALLOY AMERICAN CORP 17 Dec 1971 [29 Dec 1970] 58698/71 Heading C7A and C7D A magnetically soft alloy, for use in magnetic pole pieces in rubbing contact with moving magnetic playback tape of gamma iron oxide, is made by vacuum hot consolidating a powder of an alloy comprising - the balance being Fe, having a particle size of between 5 microns and 325 mesh (US standard sieve size), the powder having a surface oxide layer produced by pre-oxidation in air at 450-650F for long enough for the powder to absorb 2000-8000 ppm. by weight, of oxygen. The powder may be directly hot pressed or cold compacted and then hot-pressed, the pressing temperature may be 1000-1100C and the pressure may be 12, 000-20, 000 psi. Examples refer to the use of atomized powders and graphite liners in the pressing die.
