Abstract

1324923 Sintered permanent magnets BROWN BOVERI & CO Ltd 28 Oct 1971 [13 Nov 1970] 50100/71 Heading C7D Rare earth metal hydride power e.g. 5-20 wt. per cent is added to a powdered intermetallic compound consisting of at least one 3a transistor element e.g. Fe, Co, Ni and at least one rare earth metal and the mixture is sintered to form a permanent magnet. The preferred intermetallic compound is R 2 CO 1 7 or RCO 5 where R is Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd or Sm and the mixture is preferably milled to 5 micron size prior to hydrostatically pressing in a magnetic field and then vacuum degassing at 400-500‹ C and sintering in inert gas at 900-1100‹C. The intermetallic compound and hydride may contain the same or different rare earth metals.
