Abstract

1322172 Yarns; tyre cords DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd 29 Sept 1970 [11 Oct 1969] 50034/ 69 Addition to 1172358 Headings DID D1F D1T and D1W Composite cord is made by continuously passing a twistless continuous filament yarn upwardly through a hollow spindle rotating at 5000-10500 r.p.m. and simultaneously withdrawing from a bobbin (carried on and rotating with the spindle) a continuous filament yarn initially in twisted condition, then passing the yarn through a guide to combine or double the yarn and form a cord in which the constituent yarns are free from twist. The yarns may be similar or different monofilaments, multifilaments or multifilament yarn or tape made by drawing slit film. As little as 10% of the filaments of a multifilament component need be thermoplastic e.g. nylon, polyethylene terephthalate or polypropylene, to confer heatsettability on the yarn. The composite cord may be processed e.g. dyed, coated, rubberised, or heat-set or hot-stretched as by passage through a fluidised bed. As described, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown) untwisted yarns 15 is wound with twist onto a bobbin 10 carried on a hollow spindle 9 after passing through a traveller on a ring to which it is fed by upward passage through the spindle or directly from an overhead guide eye. As shown, the bobbin 10 is remounted (or remains) on the spindle, the yarn withdrawn therefrom is untwisted by the spindle rotation and merges or doubles with an untwisted yarn 19 (passing upwardly through the spindle 9) at a guide 17.
