Abstract

879,140. Yarns and threads. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. March 19, 1959 [June 4, 1958], No. 9530/59. Drawings to Specification. Class 120(3) Composite yarn comprises a low-twist i.e. less than five turns per inch, multifilament, continuous filament thread e.g. of cellulose acetate, a polyamide or polyester, silk or viscose rayon, and a twisted or untwisted elastomeric thread e.g. of rubber, synthetic rubber or polyurethane, capable of at least 100% elongation and contraction therefrom. The threads are plied or intertwisted e.g. by a "Belgian Doubling" process, Fig. 1 (not shown) during which the elastomeric thread is elongated, as a result of which the individual filaments of the multifilament thread are "blossomed out" from their normal close parallel arrangement at a contracted condition of the elastomeric thread. The ratio of X to Y (indicating the excess of multifilaments over elastomeric thread) is at least 1À7 where X is the length in inches of the multifilament thread per unit length of yarn divided by the number of turns of ply twist in such unit length and where R is the radius in inches of the elastomeric thread relaxed, h is the length in inches of relaxed elastomeric thread in said unit length divided by the number of ply twists therein, and A is the ratio of the relaxed length in inches of the segment of elastomeric thread in said unit length to the segment's new length in inches at the stretched condition of the yarn at which Y is a minimum. When the elastomeric thread is of rubber and capable of elongating to and contracting from five times its relaxed length, the ratio X to Y is at least 1À4 where Y=#(2 #R)<SP>2</SP>+h<SP>2</SP>, X, R and h having the same meanings as above, and, in the contracted condition of the rubber thread component, the multifilament thread is wrapped therearound. The wraps may be loose and/or of random dimension and/or larger in diameter than the elastomeric core and may form entanglements, loops, kinks and/or curls. Embodiments of the composite yarn include an elastomeric core with a double cover. Specifications 370,761, 380,368, 757,478 and 847,673 are referred to.
