Abstract

1,172,358. Twisting yarns, cord. DUNLOP CO. Ltd. 4 May, 1967 [7 May, 1966], No. 20307/66. Headings DID, D1F, D1T and D1W. Cord is made by passing an untwisted continuous filament yarn 9 and an initially twisted continuous filament yarn 11 together through a hollow rotating spindle 1. The resulting cord 12 is drawn off at a rate less than the rate of supply of the untwisted yarn 9. The untwisted yarn 11 is carried on the hollow spindle, the rotation of which causes the yarn 11 to unwind and become doubled with the yarn 11. Preferably the spindle is rotated at speeds up to 9,000 r.p.m. The rate of supply of the untwisted yarn 9 can be a constant ratio to the rate of which cord is drawn off. Preferably the doubling step removes the initial twist from the yarn 11, although predetermined amounts of residual twist can be allowed to remain if desired. The yarns in the resulting cord 12 are preferably both untwisted but have a helical arrangement. Yarns 9 and 11 can each be a monofilament or multifilament or made from a split film tape. The yarns can be made of rayon, nylon, polyethylene terephthalate or polypropylene. A mixture of thermoplastic and non-thermoplastic yarns can be used. The cord produced can be immediately heat-set in a fluidised bed, e.g. glass particles at 250‹C. The cord can be dyed,- coated or rubberised for use as a type cord.
