Abstract

1322148 Growing root stocks of dwarf apple trees SHIONOGI & CO Ltd 1 March 1972 [2 March 1971] 9579/72 Heading A1E Dwarf apple tree root stocks are produced by (1) planting in spring, as early as soil conditions permit, a young dwarf apple tree Fig. 1A; (2) bending the stem of the plant before any shoots sprout from its buds so that it lies horizontally but does not make contact with the ground Fig. 1B (3) piling soil around the base of each shoot when it is more than 3 cms tall Fig. 1c, (4) digging up the plant after autumn and before the start of the next new plant growth and (5) cutting the stem into pieces, each having one rooted shoot. The stem of the mother plant assumes a curved shape during its growth resulting in different growth rates of the shoots at points of differing curvature of the stem so that suitable supports are used, at various times to maintain the stem horizontal. Instead of piling up earth, each shoot may be housed independently in a container filled with soil and having a double slot in its side walls to facilitate positioning on the stem of the mother plant.
