Abstract

In order to facilitate the transplanting of root crops, the seedlings are grown in open ended tubes containing soil and made of material which will break when eventually subjected to pressure from the growing root. Initially, the tubes are placed vertically in a hot-bed and are each filled with a suitable soil into which one seed is sown. When the seedlings have grown sufficiently, they are transplanted by removing the tubes from the hot-bed and burying them in the planting ground. Alternatively the tubes may be placed initially in a box provided with a removable, waterproof lining into which is poured a fertilizer solution, in which case the lining of the box may be used eventually as a bag to transport the tubes and seedlings to the planting ground.
