Abstract

1316775 Fuel injection two-stroke engines; cylinders; driving gear; valves W E SALZMANN 15 June 1970 [13 June 1969 and 18 July 1969] 28897/70 Heading F1B [Also in Division F2] In a piston machine, particularly an internal combustion engine, the piston is integral with or rigidly connected to the connecting rod and the cylinder wall 132, 133, Fig.3, is inwardly curved to conform to the envelope surface formed by the periphery of the piston during its operational movement. The piston may be square, circular, rectangular or elliptical. In the four-stroke engine shown in Fig. 3, the cylinder block 143 may have a cast cooling water space 142 or a wet liner 144. The piston crown 146 is a sheet metal pressing rigidly connected to a tubular connecting rod 147 having a big end bearing half 148 welded to or cast therewith. Valve pockets 149, 150 interconnected by a channel 151 are formed in the crown 146 opposite the inlet and outlet valves 139 and 140 respectively and the rocking movement of the piston in use acts to mix the gases in the combustion chamber. In the two stroke engine shown in Fig.7, the piston seal 166 controls the exhaust port 168 and activates a slide valve 170 therefore loaded by a return spring 171. The horizontal engine shown in Figs.8 and 9 comprises a square piston 175 and two inwardly plane sides 177, 178 connected by bolts 193 to a central housing 176 comprising a cylinder head, inwardly curved cylinder walls 181, and a crank-case 182. The piston is integral with a double-web connecting rod 184 and has two skirt portions 185 controlling exhaust ports 186. The connecting rods may be of synthetic plastics.
