Abstract

1315601 Brazing CONTACTS Inc 11 May 1971 [9 June 1970] 14365/71 Addition to 1310277 Heading B3R A method of bonding copper and copper alloy workpieces comprises plating the workpieces with a very thin layer of silver or of tin or of both, oxidizing the workpieces at a temperature in the range 600‹ to 800‹ F. for 15-120 minutes, and heating the workpieces in appropriate juxtaposition in a reducing atmosphere to a temperature in the range 500‹ to 1600‹ F. for a short period, e.g. 10 minutes and cooling under oxidizing-inhibiting conditions. The method is applied to closing the groove 16 in a wire terminal 10, the plating being of the order of up to three ten thousandths of an inch, oxidizing being carried out by heating in air and the reducing atmosphere being, e.g. dissociated ammonia, forming gas or hydrogen. Where the terminals are processed in bulk quantities a parting compound may be applied before oxidation is carried out.
