Abstract
1,257,148. Thermistors. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 18 Aug., 1970. No. 39718/70. Heading H1K. A thermistor comprises a ceramic disc 1 composed of a ceramic mixture of the oxides of nickel and manganese, with a contact layer 2 of silver, gold or platinum fired on from metal paste, to which flat leads 3 of platinum or gold are affixed by thermocompression. Circular wires 4 of nickel iron alloy, copper-plated and boraxcoated, are spot-welded to the leads 3, and the disc resistance is adjusted to standard by removing part of the contact layer or grooving the layer to isolate an area 6. The disc, leads and wires are encapsulated in a glass envelope either solid, or hollow containing inert gas, e.g. nitrogen and slowly cooled (Figs. 2, 3, not shown).
