Abstract

540,961. Making radiators. ASHBY, C. L. G. Nov. 5, 1940, No. 16090. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Soldering.-Copper or copper alloy articles, such as radiators, are soldered by first coating the parts with silver, then assembling them and heating to a temperature above 780‹ C. in a non- oxidizing atmosphere so that the silver-copper eutectic is formed and solders the parts together. The coating may be effected by electro-deposition or by joining superposed sheets by heat and pressure. The silver should not be more than 1/16 th as thick as the copper and not more than 0.0003 inch thick. The articles are shaped or treated by stamping, drawing or rolling after coating and then assembled and soldered at about 800‹ C. The non-oxidizing atmosphere may consist of hydrogen, cracked or burnt ammonia, steam, burnt town gas &c.
