Abstract

1315179 Welding by pressure; jointing by tube expanding SULZER BROS Ltd 13 Aug 1970 [23 Sept 1969] 39108/70 Headings B3J and B3R In a method of securing a tube to a tube plate a first explosive charge is used to expand a first part of the tube within the tube plate and a second explosive charge is used to weld a second part of the tube to the tube plate. The tube 3, Fig. 1, may be preformed with expanded collars 10, 11, detonation of a first explosive charge 24 within a pressure transmitting insert 20 serving to expand that portion of the tube between the collars 10, 11 against the tube plate. The second explosive charge 25 which is detonated by the explosion of the first welds the tube to the tube plate at the end portion 4. The explosive charges 24, 25 are in the form of explosive cord and the first has a high detonation velocity, preferably greater than the sonic velocity in the tube wall. The second charge 25 is preferably greater than the first. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2, the first explosive charge 43 is disposed partly within a metal tube 51 which is surrounded by a cupshaped second explosive charge 48 and the tube plate has a conically flared end adjacent the second charge. The first charge 43 is detonated outside the tube assembly and the detonation travels along within the tube 51 with little effect on the tube 39. After passing the end of the tube 51 the second explosive charge 48 is detonated and welds the tube to the tube plate in the flared end portion while the remainder of the charge 43 expands the further portion of the tube 39 into firm engagement with the bore 35 of the tube plate 36. In a third embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) a single detonator is used to detonate simultaneously two charges one of which is in the form of a cylindrically arranged explosive foil. In a fourth embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) three explosive charges are used (one being cup-shaped as in Fig. 2) to weld the tube to the front and rear portions of the tube plate with an expanded intermediate portion. The tube plate may be provided with a hood which is evacuated during the mounting operation to reduce the noise nuisance.
