Abstract

The method of fixing tubes (3) into the plates (4), as found in heat exchangers, uses explosives. There are two stages in the process, and in the first stage the clearance between the tube and tube plate is taken up either by a small explosion or by other known methods such as a taper mandrel. In the second stage a larger explosion is used which effectively welds the tube to the tube plate. The explosive charges (2) are contained in specifically shaped polyvinylchloride cases (1) which for the first stage keep the charge at a greater distance from the tube wall than for the second stage.
