Abstract

1314307 Shaft seals J AICHELIN 28 Jan 1972 [23 March 1971] 4001/72 Heading F2B A rotary shaft 2 passes into an industrial furnace through a casing 1 and is sealed by one or more sealing rings 7, 7a mounted in a housing 8 associated with the furnace casing at a position along the shaft outwardly of a bearing 5, a cooling disc 11 being mounted for rotation with the shaft and provided with a thermallyconducting sleeve 16 for engagement by the sealing rings. The cooling disc 11 may be formed as a sprocket wheel or belt pulley for driving the shaft 2, prevented from rotation relative to the shaft by a key 13 and made gastight by an end plate 14. The sleeve 16 may be insulated from the shaft by an air clearance or asbestos packing 17. The sealing rings 7, 7a may be of the liptype and a sealing gas introduced between them through a pipe 19.
