Abstract

1308379 Ionization chambers LICENTIA PATENT-VERWALTUNGS GmbH 21 July 1970 [24 July 1970] 35288/70 Heading H1D A neutron-sensitive gas-filled ionization chamber for use in a boiling water nuclear reactor, is formed as a continuation of a coaxial cable. The outer conductor of the cable is stripped off the region A and a tube 5 is buttwelded to the cable sheath 2 at 6. A seal 7, rings of solder 12, and the inner conductor 4 of the chamber are fitted into the tube 5 and over the core 1 and the structure is exhausted, brought to soldering temperature, and filled with gas, after which the outer tube 5 is pinched at the front end and welded. The conductor 4 is coated with uranium applied electrolytically and the spacers 10 of aluminium oxide are applied by cathode sputtering. Apertures may be provided in the spacers 10 and in the aluminium oxide cylinder 11 to equalize gas pressure inside and outside the cylinder 4. The life of the chamber may be extended by including a fertile material or a poison. The seal may comprise a nickel tube 7 on which a layer 8 of aluminium oxide and a nickel layer 9 are deposited by cathode sputtering. Alternatively it may comprise a tube of aluminium oxide coated internally and externally with metal.
