Abstract

1277485 Lasers CENTRE NATIONAL DE LA RECHERCHE SCIENTIFIQUE and COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE 10 Sept 1969 [11 Sept 1968] 44778/69 Heading H1C A gas laser comprises a peripheral tube 11 which is sealed at its ends to the flared ends 17 of a coaxial capillary tube 10, the two tubes forming an enclosed space through which a coolant is circulated and which contains a plasma-concentrating coil 13 wound on a support tube 12. Internal or external projections 14 locate the support tube in the enclosed space; alternatively or in addition a porous packing 36 may be used. Inlet and outlet conduits 15, 16 are common to the coolant and the coil connections. The gas is typically argon and is excited by D.C. from a source 20 applied to a (lower) anode and an (upper) cathode 31, both electrodes being included in assemblies 2, 3 separately detachable from the tube structure and including Brewster windows 29, 35. The anode assembly 2 is formed of stainless steel, and comprises inner and outer walls enclosing a space 18 for a fluid coolant, and a detachable cap 25 which clamps the Brewster window 29 against an inclined flat 22 between rubber rings 23, 24. The cathode assembly 3 consists of an enclosure 26 having a flap door 28 through which the cathode electrode 31 supported by a conductive rod 32 may be removed for replacement. A coil 27 through which a coolant is circulated is welded to the enclosure 26. The Brewster window 35 is secured to the enclosure by an adhesive. Both anode and cathode assemblies are detachably secured to the tube structure by the combination of a rubber packing 4, 5, annular compression wedges 6, 7 and screw-threaded rings 8, 9.
