Abstract

1305568 Steam cracking FLUOR CORP and H F A TOPSOE 16 Dec 1970 [23 Dec 1969] 62553/69 Heading C5E [Also in Division B1] Unsaturated hydrocarbons are produced by contacting a saturated hydrocarbon feed in the presence of steam with a catalyst comprising an alkali metal comound and zirconium oxide at least part of which is amorphous prepared from amorphous zirconium oxide or a precursor thereof (see Division B1). The process is carried out at a temperature below 1100‹ C. and a pressure of 0À1-50 atm. abs. A minor proportion of unsaturated hydrocarbons may be added to the saturated hydrocarbon feed. The steam/hydrocarbon feed ratio should be 0À1 : 1 to 10 : 1. In the examples the hydrocarbon feeds treated are (i) a light naphtha comprising 24À1% isopentane; 53À6% n-pentane, 13À5% iso-hexane, 5À6% n-hexane and 3À2% aromatics; and (ii) pure n-heptane. The products specified include C 2 H 4 , C 3 H 6 , C 4 H 8 , C 4 H 6 , CH 4 , C 2 H 6 , CO 2 , H 2 and C 4 + saturated hydrocarbons.
