Abstract
Catalysts for steam reforming of hydrocarbons to produce hydrogen-rich gases, consisting of alumina free from silica and opt. contg. at least one of beryllium oxide, clacium oxide and strontium oxide. Th catalysts are of lower activity and less sensitive than conventional nickel oxide catalysts which form solid solutions with the carrier and rapidly become de-activated at 850 degrees C or above. The use of alumina catalysts at higher temps. gives gas mixtures with low methane content. Crude oils and heavier fractions can be used without carbon deposition on the catalyst, which is not poisoned by sulphur impurities, so that Kuwait oils with high S contents may be used.
