Abstract
1,268,457. Desulphurizing coke. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 12 March, 1970 [24 March, 1969], No. 11956/70. Heading C5E. Petroleum coke from a fluidized bed coking process is desulphurized by being contacted with steam at a temperature in the range 800‹ to 2500‹ F. and a pressure between 200 and 3000 p.s.i.g., whereby the coke is gasified by from 5 to 50% b.w. and the S content is reduced to less than 1.5% b.w. Preferably a catalyst, e.g. K 2 CO 3 , is included in the reaction, e.g. in amounts ranging from 1 to 50% b.w. of the charge. Moving and fluidized bed processes may be used, and steam amounts may range from 0.05 to 20.0 w./w./hr.
