Abstract
1304701 Boring earth STICHTING WATERBOUWKUNDIG LABORATORIUM 6 Feb 1970 [7 Feb 1969] 5873/70 Heading E1F In a process of taking an undisturbed soil sample using a core tube having an annular chamber 4 for a stretchable hose 24 arranged to surround and support the sample 25 in the tube, a detachable tube 18 is provided to support the hose 24 and sample 25. A lubricating liquid - for example an oil - is provided between the tube 18 and the hose to allow the hose and sample to move upwardly in the tube without disturbance. A supporting liquid flows through holes 23 into the bottom of the chamber and creates an appropriate pressure to urge the hose against the sample before the hose reaches tube 18. The inner wall of the chamber is formed by a tube 17 surrounding rods 14 which connect a lower ring 12 to an upper ring secured by a ball joint to the core tube. As the core tube is pressed into the soil further sections are screwed to the core tube and further sections are connected to tube 18 by adhesive tape. A cable 32 keeps the top of the hose at the same height, as the core tube and tube 18 move into the soil. A torsion sleeve (35 Fig. 1) is moved by rotation of the upper sections of the tube 18 to grip the sample when the core tube is withdrawn. The core sample is transported in the sections of tube 18 after the adhesive tape and sample has been cut by, for example, a wire connected to a direct current source.
