Abstract

1302948 Pipe joints G W WALTON 24 June 1970 [26 Sept 1969 2 Jan 1970] 30765/70 Heading F2G A ball and socket joint for pipe-lines comprises a ball and socket 10, 14, a ball retaining member 15, and a seal carried by a cylindrical surface 12 of the ball against an annular shoulder 26, the seal including a sealing ring 28 of rubber &c., a retaining ring 25, and a follower ring 29 of steel, &c. As a modification, the follower ring 29 may be a flange (35), Fig. 4 (not shown), on a tube providing the cylindrical surface 12, screwed into the end of the ball member 10. The retaining ring 29 has a convex surface which co-operates with a concave surface in the sealing ring 28. The retaining ring 25 and the rubber sealing ring 28 are connected by a tongue and groove, &c., and the seal can turn as a whole on the cylindrical surface 12. In the embodiment shown, the retaining member 15 is screwed into the socket 14 and has a grease nipple 20 for lubricating the surface of the ball and a grease retaining ring 22 located in a groove 23. In Fig. 5 (not shown, the ball retaining member (40) is connected to the socket (41) by bolts (42) and nuts (43). In Fig. 6 (not shown), the ball (52) is supported by ball bearings (55) within the socket mouth. In the embodiment of Fig. 7, the ball has diametrically opposed openings 83, 84 formed in slots 86, 87 respectively on its surface and the slots are positioned perpendicular relative to each other. Trunnions 78, 80 in the socket 72, when screwed fully inwards, engage the openings 83, 84 and in this position the ball moves relative to the socket 72 about the longitudinal axes of the trunnions. Withdrawing the trunnion 80 completely and the trunnion 78 so that it engages the slot 86 only, the movement of the ball member is governed by the direction of the slot 86, i.e. moves about an axis in a direction perpendicular to the slot at opening 83. Withdrawing the trunnion 78 completely and screwing in the trunnion 80 so that it engages the slot 87, the ball in this position moves about its own longitudinal axis.
