Abstract

1299900 Piston rings SEALFIRE 15 Dec 1969 [16 Dec 1968 25 Nov 1969] 61056/69 Heading F2T A piston and piston ring unit for an I.C. engine comprises at least one compression ring 12, Fig. 1, in a groove, a sealing joint element 14 between the ring and groove on the low pressure side, and means, such as a groove bottom. seal 15, to protect the radially-inward face of the sealing joint element from the compression pressure applied from the combustion chamber to the piston whereby outward creep of the sealing joint element towards the cylinder wall is prevented. The sealing joint element 14 may be made of P.T.F.E. with a bronze filler. The compression ring 32, Fig. 3 or the groove may be stepped and the compression ring gap may be sealed by a gap joint (79), Fig. 7 (not shown), or a gap joint 99, Fig. 9, which may be in the form of a ring or an arcuate segment and made of steel, cast iron, copper alloy, a fluorinated elastomer or P.T.F.E. mixed with bronze or glass fibre. The sealing joint element may be supported by a ring 16, Fig. 14, which may be made of steel, cast iron, bronze, or copper and silver or their alloys and formed as a continuous ring, split ring or segmental ring with or without radial cuts to increase its elasticity against the cylinder wall; relative rotation between the sealing joint element and the compression ring may be prevented by a tongue (411), Fig. 11 (not shown). The groove bottom seal may be of square, rectangular or round cross-section.
