Machine guns.-Relates to " long-recoil " machine guns of the kind in which the breech is opened and closed under the control of a rocking longitudinal shaft with toes at both ends. According to the invention, the breech-block, or a part sliding therewith, is held back at the end of the recoil bv the rear toe of the longitudinal shaft, and the shaft is rocked to release the breech-block by the engagement of a projection on the barrel or barrel extension with the front toe of the shaft. In the form shown, the breech mechanism is worked bv a sleeve 5, as described in Specification 126,345, and this sleeve has a lug 20 which, at the end of the recoil, is caught by the rear toe 24 of the longitudinal shaft 23 and thus opens the breech while the barrel is running out. At the end of the run-out, an incline 36 carried by the barrel strikes the front toe 37, rocking the shaft and releasing the lug 20 from the rear toe 24. The breech then closes.
