1296634 Shortenable umbrellas BREMSHEY A G 9 July 1971 [22 July 1970 24 July 1970 15 June 1971] 32397/71 Heading A4P A shortenable umbrella, preferably having a substantially rectangular cross-section transverse to telescopic stick 1, Fig. 1, axis when closed, has a handle 2 with a recess 46 receiving a sleeve 41<SP>1</SP> of a main slider 41 when the umbrella is closed, a pin 47 projecting from the bottom of the handle to guide the up and down sliding movement of a stick support plate 45 in recess 46, and a catch retaining the plate 45 in its upper limiting position. The pin 47 slides in the lower hollow end of a lower, inner, stick part 1<SP>1</SP> secured to a bush 48 integral with plate 45 and having a slot 52 in which a hook 50 of a catch on sleeve 41<SP>1</SP> may engage. The plate 45 is retained in its upper and lower positions by a resilient ring 54 cooperating with handle projections 55, 58. The plate-retaining catch may alternatively comprise a spring-loaded ball (61) in the pin 47, Fig.3 (not shown). In an alternative handle, Figs. 5-8 (not shown), the pin 47 is surrounded by a metal tube (74) and bevelled peripheral edges of the plate (45) co-operate with integral inward projections (55), (58) from the wide or narrow side walls of the generally rectangular recess 46 to retain the plate 45 in its upper or lower position, the handle walls being resilient. Projections (77) at the upper corners of recess 46 limit the upward movement of the plate. The umbrella further comprises telescopic ribs having U-shaped inner and middle parts 6, (7), Fig. 9 and Fig. 4 (not shown) and outer wire parts (8), the inner parts 6 being pivoted to a crown 3 having a cap (37), Fig.10 (not shown) retaining the cover B. Main struts 12 are pivoted to the main slider 41 and auxiliary struts 11 are pivoted to an auxiliary slider 14 at their inner ends and to rib braces (10), Fig. 4 (not shown), at their outer ends, the outer ends of braces (10) being pivoted to the ribs and tension links (13) extending between the main struts 12 and braces (10). Each rib-part 6 is pivoted to the crown by means of an axle wire in a groove (30), Fig.12 (not shown) in the crown, there being for each rib-part 6 a respective pair of parallel slots in the crown to receive the side webs of the U-section of the part 6 and a crossslot connecting said pair of slots to receive the middle web of the U-section. The struts 11 and 12 are similarly of U-section, at least near the sliders, and are similarly pivoted to the sliders 14 and 41 respectively. The auxiliary slider 14 has a sleeve 42 extending through the main slider 41 and having a slot 43 in which a catch 44 on the stick engages when the umbrella is open.
