Two dowelling machines 20, Fig. 1, are adjustably mounted on a base 21 having slideways 22, each machine 20 being mounted on a further carriage 23 provided with transverse slideways 24. The workpiece 25 may be clamped at each station 26 by an anvil 27 and co-operating foot 28. After being cut to size by circular saws 33 which move on tracks 34, the workpiece is drilled by bits 36 mounted in drill heads 35 powered by electrical motors 37 which are mounted on a carriage 38 which may be advanced or retracted by a fluid motor 41. A dowel carrier 42, Fig. 5 mounted on a slideway 43, complementary slide bar 44 and dovetail bar 39 which provides for minor adjustment of the carriage along the bar 44 is shuttled between a dowel setting position, at station 26 and a dowel loading position adjacent the dowel loader 45 by a fluid motor (40, Fig. 11, not shown). The dowel carrier 42 comprises a plurality of units each having a saddle 46 into which dowels are placed from the dowel loader 45 which may comprise a gravity fed chute and push-rod arrangement (as in Fig. 4, not shown, and Fig. 5) or a pneumatically operated device (as in Fig. 12, not shown). A glue nozzle 57, Fig. 5, provided with a flexible glue supply tube 60 connected to a glue pump 61 is included in each unit of the dowel carrier and is arranged to coat the wall of the drilled hole prior to insertion of the dowel and also to remove excess glue to keep the nozzle clear. After drilling and gluing the dowels are inserted in the holes set by the action of pusher pads 86 (Fig. 7) mounted on the crosshead 85 of a frame 69 which may be driven forward by a fluid motor 77, and which when the drill heads are retracted takes up a position such that the dowels 47 will be forced into the holes 56 and thus-set.
