1288130 Making axle housings; improving physical properties GORKOVSKY AVTOMOBILNY ZAVOD 7 July 1970 32832/70 Headings B3A and B3V An axle housing for a vehicle is made by cold pressing sheet metal blanks, welding a pair of pressed blanks to form the housing, heat-treating the housing by high frequency induction heating and cooling the housing, preferably with water. The metal of the blanks has a yield strength not over 30 kg./mm.<SP>2</SP> and a tensile strength not under 45 kg./mm.<SP>2</SP>. In an example a coldpressed sheet had a yield strength of 28 to 31 kg./mm.<SP>2</SP>, a tensile strength of 47 to 49 kg./mm.<SP>2</SP> and a Brinell hardness from 131 to 139. After heat treatment the values obtained were 50 to 80 kg./mm.<SP>2</SP>, 80 to 108 kg./mm.<SP>2</SP> and 321 to 387 (at the external water-cooled side) and 228 to 269 (at the inner side of the housing) respectively. The metal is preferably a low-alloy low-carbon steel.
