315,444. Reinartz, L. F., and Nead, J. H. Feb. 14, 1928. Alloys.-In a process of producing alloys of iron with such metals as chromium, cobalt, molybdenum, nickel, titanium, or vanadium, having a carbon content not exceeding 0.1 per cent, a bath of molten iron of very low carbon and impurity content, which may be part of the product of an open-hearth furnace, is prepared under oxidizing conditions in an electric furnace. The bath is degasified, and a reducing slag is then formed on the surface of the bath, a carbon-free alloying metal being added whilst maintaining the heat in the furnace.
