Abstract

1287285 Coating webs H P DAHLGREN 27 Aug 1969 42697/69 Heading D1L A layer of liquid which has been transferred to a variable speed transfer roll 3 from a variable speed metering roll 12 partially immersed in a bath, is applied either directly to a web (as shown) or to a web-applicator roll, Fig. 7 (not shown), the nip(s) being formed between rolls having surfaces of relatively hard and resilient materials and being in indented contact, and each roll 3, 12 having separate drive means 8, 18. The pressure at the nip(s) may be varied. One end of the metering roll 12 may be fixed whilst the other end may be moved in an arc with respect to the axis of the transfer roll. The web may have a backing roll, which may be one for simultaneously coating the other side of the web. The length of the roll's axis may decrease from the metering to the backing roll forming a stepped arrangement, Fig. 10 (not shown). Paper may be coated with an aqueous or non- aqueous liquid. Plastic or metal may also be coated co-pending. Application 24701/72 is referred to.
