948,079. Coating webs. KIMBERLYCLARK CORPORATION. Dec. 21, 1960 [Dec. 21, 1959], No.43915/60. Heading D1L. An apparatus for coating a paper web 17 comprises means for holding the web 17 against a backing roll 14 at a point thereon and for there applying the coating, e.g. from a roll 13, a blade 25 forming a nip with the roll 14 at a second point on the roll 14, and a roll 24 arranged to hold the web out of contact with the roll 14 between the two points. Coating material 12 is fed to the roll 13 by a roll 11, and the roll 13 is driven at a slightly lower speed than the roll 14. The coated web makes tangential contact with the roll 14 at the point where the blade 25 contacts the roll 14, and passes on to a drier roll 23. The various rolls are preferably adjustable and the blade 25 is flexible. Two-coating apparatus may be arranged in series to coat both sides of the web. The web 17 may first contact the roll 13 instead of the roll 14 before entering the nip between the rolls 13,14.
