Abstract

868,924. Coated polyethylene film. LOEWE PAPER CO. May 23, 1957 [May 24, 1956], No. 16424/57. Class 140. Sheet material comprising coated polyethylene is prepared by extruding polyethylene to form a film and applying a hydrophilic coating to a surface of the hot film immediately on its emergence from the extrusion orifice. The hydrophilic substance may be starch, carboxymethyl cellulose or a protein e.g. gelatin or casein. The polyethylene film may be united with a backing of another material, e.g. paper or boxboard, at the side remote from the hydrophilic coating. The backing material may be continuously extrusion-coated with polyethylene and the hydrophilic coating is continuously applied to the polyethylene as this is applied to the backing material. As shown, paper 6 is fed into a nip formed between roller 7 and cooling drum 10. Molten polyethylene 8 is continuously extruded in the form of a film into the nip so that the paper becomes extrusion-coated with the polyethylene at the nip. A polar, e.g. aqueous adhesive solution 12 which is to form the hydrophilic coating, is fed by means of rollers 13 to the surface 14 of the cooled drum 10. The solution passes underneath radiant heaters 15 so that water is evaporated from it. The adhesive is transferred to the hot-extruded polyethylene film as it is being combined with the paper in the nip, the paper carrying the polyethylene and hydrophilic coatings being removed from drum 10 by roller 16.
