Abstract
1282189 Thermal switches WAGNER ELECTRIC CORP 16 Sept 1970 [27 Oct 1969] 44189/70 Heading H1N A flasher switch of the hot wire type with contact held closed by an electromagnet while the wire 20 cools has auxiliary contacts 34, 36, 44, 46 to interrupt the load current to avoid sparking at the main contacts 28, 30. When on/off switch S is closed a small current flows from battery B through an armature 12, the wire 20, a resistor 26 a coil 48 of the electromagnet 52 to the load L. This current is insufficient to energize the load or the electromagnet but heats the wire 20 so that it expands causing contacts 34, 36 to close and then contacts 28, 30 which short out the hot wire 20 and resistor 26. The increased current energizes the load L and causes the electromagnet to attract the armature 12 and another armature 38 which closes contacts 44, 46 in series with 34, 36 across the main contacts 28, 30. When the wire 20 has sufficiently cooled to draw the armature 12 away from the electromagnet contacts 28, 30 separate first, arclessly, then contacts 34, 36 open to interrupt the load current. The electromagnet finally releases contacts 44, 46. The cycle then repeats.
