Abstract

1280598 Cyclone discharge arrangements CELLECO AB 23 March 1970 [21 March 1969] 13970/70 Heading B2P In a cyclone separator 1, Fig. 3, having a discharge chamber 3 which is coaxial with the vortex chamber 2 of the cyclone and which has an inlet 6 for a separated phase at one end and a discharge outlet 7 at the other end such that, in use, the separated phase entering the discharge chamber travels in a helical path from the inlet to the outlet, a fixed flow restrictor 12 is provided in the chamber 3, spaced from the outlet, and presents a surface portion or portions disposed in the helical path of the separated phase and arranged to impede the flow of that phase to the outlet 7 of the chamber 3. In Fig. 3, the restrictor 12 consists of a helical guide vane welded to the wall of the chamber 3, the hand of the vane being opposite to that of the helical path of the discharging phase. In Fig. 4, propeller-type vanes 12a are mounted on an upright 9 which carries at its upper end a baffle plate 8 which acts as a check on the axial flow of the discharging phase. In Fig. 5, the discharging phase is prevented from rebounding into the vortex chamber 2 by the provision of a downwardly extending cylindrical flange 14 on the baffle plate and of a perforated annular partition 13 between the vane 12 and the impact plate. Alternatively, the partition may consist of a plate provided with evenly distributed smaller orifices. In Fig. 6, the restrictor consists of a tubular bar 12b perpendicular to the axis of the discharge chamber 3. The upright 9 and the plate 8 have a bore 11 opening into the bore of the bar 12b through which the gas core in the vortex chamber may be sucked out. The cyclone may be mounted horizontally or upside down. The discharge chamber may be arranged at the heavy phase and/or light phase outlet. The treated material may be a liquid suspension (e.g. a fibre suspension) or a gas suspension.
