Abstract

1,168,989. Centrifugal separators. COMBUSTION ENG. Inc. 27 Oct., 1966 [17 Dec., 1965], No. 48320/66. Heading B2P. A centrifugal separator for removing particles from fluid, e.g. from gas issuing from a boiler plant, comprises a generally cylindrical separator tube 24, Fig. 1, between which and a clean-fluid discharge tube 28 at one end is provided an annular inlet passage which is in communication with an inlet chamber 20 for the supply of particle-laden fluid and which has mounted therein helical vanes 44 to impart a peripheral vortex 98 to the incoming particle-laden fluid, the outlet end of the discharge tube 28 being in communication with .an outlet chamber 22, and deflecting member 54 being provided at the other end of the separator tube 24 for redirecting the fluid to the inlet end along a core vortex flow path 100 and recirculated for further separation into the peripheral vortex 98 by means of an annular skimming member 48 provided adjacent the inlet end 30 of the discharge tube 28. Flow-straightening vanes 36 are positioned in the inlet end of the discharge tube 28 which may be provided internally with a diffuser section 34. A conical sleeve 40 is attached to the outer surface of the tube 28 to provide the annular inlet passage with a gradually decreasing cross-sectional area. The skimming member 48 is provided between the lower ends of tube 28 and the sleeve 40 and diverts a portion of the fluid without producing turbulent eddies. The deflecting member 54 serves as a partition between the interior of the tube 24, which constitutes a primary separation chamber 56, and a lower secondary separation chamber 58. The member 54 has a concave surface 60 which is provided with a scoop-shaped opening 68 for directing the separated particles and a portion of the fluid tangentially as a peripheral vortex flow 98' into the chamber 58 where further separation takes place. The separated particles are discharged through the bottom open end 89 of the chamber 58 while the separated fluid is reversed as a core vortex flow 100' by a constriction 90 adjacent the end 89, and passes upwardly through a tube 92 and one or more openings 64 provided in a cylindrical extension 62 of the deflecting member 54. Baffles 66 associated with the openings 64 direct the fluid tangentially into the core vortex flow path 100. The tube 92 has a skimming edge 96 for recirculating a portion of the fluid into the chamber 58. A drop-shaped bulb 74 mounted into the upper end of the extension 62 acts as a flow stabilizer and has a maximum diameter of such a dimension as to broaden the core vortex 100 such that its diameter is greater than that of the opening at the inlet end 30 of the discharge tube 28 whereby a portion of the vortex 100 is recirculated by the skimming member 48.
