Abstract

1416439 Electron beam irradiation apparatus AVCO CORP 8 Nov 1972 [23 Dec 1971] 51570/72 Heading H1D A device for pulse or continuous external electron beam irradiation comprises evacuated main housing 11 surrounding inner enclosure 13 with electron emission means such as filament or filaments 18 and conductive grid 35, the inner enclosure being electrically connected to externally located auxiliary housing 24 by tubular connecting member 19 insulated from and sealed to housing 11 by insulator 22, auxiliary housing 24 containing energizing means 31, 32, connected to filament(s) 18 by wires 33, 35, main housing 11 being maintained at a positive potential relative to inner enclosure 13 and to grid 35 (also, Fig. 3, not shown), and having electron beam permeable window 37 (also, Figs. 2 and 4, not shown). The construction shields filament(s) 18 and the power supply from external fields. Parallelism of filament 18, grid 35 and window 37 is preferred. Housing 11 and enclosure 13 are preferably metallic, insulator 22 of P.T.F.E., and filaments 18 of spring loaded W, or thoriated W. Temperature and space change limited operations and secondary emission from grid screen 35 are discussed. Evacuation via pipe 11a prevents breakdown between enclosure 13 and housing 11. Foil or sheet 37 may be Al, Be, Ti, an alloy or plastics material, removably secured by ring 42 by described means, and usually electrically connected with housing 11. Circuitry is as in Fig. 5 (not shown) with optical control via pipes (51), (52). Potentials are discussed. Fig. 6 (not shown), includes a.h.v. bushing comprising non-conductive sleeve (80), glass rings (81), and metal washers (82) connected across voltage divider resistors (89), and is removably attached to housing (71) and has metal ring (83) to shape the field. Spacer member (87) is about foil (84), (also, Fig. 8, not shown), and grid (91), which may be identical to grid (92), (Fig. 7, not shown), this structure preventing arc damage to foil (84). Uses of the device include radiation chemistry, sterilization, preservation, curing paints and varnishes, and ionization of gases as for MHD and laser devices.
