Abstract

1276977 Detecting the opacity of gases M T PILLARD and F GUIGUES 11 March 1970 [13 March 1969] 11645/70 Heading G1A An apparatus for detecting the opacity of combustion smoke or gas containing particles 7 in suspension flowing through a duct comprises a light source and a photo-electric receiver, the source and receiver being disposed away from the hot walls 6 of the duct and being connected by optical fibres 14 to spigots 11, 10 so that the spigot 10 collects the light beam reflected by the particles in suspension. The spigots each take the form of a hollow sleeve 12 with scavenging air-flowing between the sleeve 12 and the optical fibre, said air being intended to prevent soot collecting on the optical fibres. To obviate errors due to temperature variations, the photo-electric receiver is paired with an identical but unilluminated detector heated to the same temperature, each detector being placed in one arm of a Wheatstone bridge. The two spigots are so secured to their plate 9 that their axes form with one another an angle which can be any value from 0 degrees to just under 180 degrees.
