Abstract

1275041 Muscle-powered submarine; ballasting and trimming HEM Ltd 1 May 1969 [2 Feb 1968] 36063/67 Headings B7A B7M and B7V] A submarine 1 for one or more occupants is powered by pedals 5 or hand cranks acting through chain 7, flywheel 9, chain 8 and gearing 12 to drive a propeller shaft 11 or a generator or pump. The hull may be of glass fibre and incorporates floodable buoyancy tanks on either side of cockpit 2. Ballast weights 16 on either side of keel 10 may be jettisoned by releasing a catch 37 operated from cockpit 2. Individual weights within the casings of weights 16 may be axially spaced to set the trim, Fig. 3 (not shown). Weights 16 also may be moved longitudinally from within the submarine to adjust the trim. Movement is controlled by vanes 17 and rudder 20. Pipeline 25 incorporating a rigid section 25d connects cockpit 2 to a float 26 carrying a suction pump 27 for drawing stale air out of the cockpit via pipe 25a, fresh air being admitted via inlet 33 and pipe 25b. Pump 27 may be battery-operated and alternatively may be located in the cockpit. Alternatively, oxygen cylinders may be provided in the cockpit. Cockpit 2 is sealed by a transparent dome 13 which may be replaced by a windscreen for surface use of the craft; sails may be used when on the surface, outriggers with pontoons then being provided, Fig. 2 (not shown).
