1421663 Ships &c F S MALVESTUTO Jnr 4 April 1973 [14 April 1972] 16050/73 Headings B7A and B7V A water vessel has a hull 11 from which extend air foils 12, 13, 14, 15 to produce a lift force when the vessel is in motion so that the hull rises partly out of the water to reduce drag. Forward thrust and additional lift is provided by propellers 22-25 which are mounted for rotation about vertical axes, one adjacent the trailing edge of each air foil, e.g. in a semicircular cut-out as shown. The thrust arises because the propeller creates increased air pressure at the trailing edge surface 30 of the airfoil. Each propeller also improves the effect of its associated airfoil by increasing the flow of air over its upper surface 17 and decreasing the flow of air over its lower surface 18. Forward thrust may also be provided by tilting the propellers so that their axes are directed forwardly and upwardly. The airfoils 12-15 have depending from their outer ends, end-plates 50, 51, 60, 61 for increased efficiency which are carried by a pontoon float 52, 63 one each side of the vessel.
