Abstract

1275035 Impact absorbers for use with railway couplings SCHARFENBERGKUPPLUNG GmbH 16 March 1971 7343/71 Heading B7T [Also in Division F2] An impact absorber, for use with railway combined buff and draft gear of a central buffer coupling, comprises coaxial hollow cylinders 1, 2 defining an annular gap 3 which at its open end diverges at 9 and is engaged by the chamfered free end of a further holder cylinder 8 whose wall thickness is greater than the gap width, such that an impact force on a coupling in excess of 200 tonnes is absorbed by the cylinder 8 entering the gap 3 with permanent deformation of cylinders 1 and 2. The cylinder 1 has at its free end an outer reinforcement 4 and the cylinder 2 is reinforced by being closed by a plate 7. The portion 8a of the cylinder 8 is greater than the remainder of the cylinder and may be case-hardened.
