Abstract

1,273,665. Phenolic resin curing agent. DYNAMIT NOBEL A.G. 6 June, 1969 [6 June, 1968], No. 35870/70. Divided out of 1,272,016. Heading C3R. A composition suitable for curing liquid resins comprises a liquid or gaseous acid absorbed on finely divided active carbon, bentonite, montmorillonite or highly dispersed silica. The acid may be HCl, H 2 S0 4 , H 3 P0 4 or dichloroacetio acid. The composition may be used to cure a liquid resole prepared from a phenol (e.g. phenol, a cresol, a xylenol, resorcinol or pyrocatechol) and an aldehyde (e.g. formaline, paraformaldehyde, trioxan, hexamethylene tetramine, acetaldehyde or furfural) in the presence of an alkali, e.g. sodium hydroxide. The curing may be effected at elevated temperature. In an example, ethoxylated castor oil is added to the liquid resin before curing.
