Abstract

1,177,656. Particle board. AIRSCREWWEYROC Ltd. and UNILEVER Ltd. 16 May, 1967 [19 May, 1966], No. 22396/66. Headings C3N and C3R. Particle board is made by a process in which a modified phenolic resin binder is acidified by the addition before curing to the board components of an acidifying agent sufficient to bring the resin pH to 3À5-8. The particles may be wood, sawdust, flax shives, or exfoliated vermiculite. The resin may be a phenol formaldehyde resole resin, in alkaline solution, some of the resole methylol groups having been reacted with a polyfunctional phenol, e.g. xylenol, metacresol or resorcinol. Acidifying agents may be HCOOH, CH 3 COOH, p-toluene- Sulphonic acid, H 3 P0 4 , NH 4 CI, or Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 . The acidifying agent may be added to the particles before, during, or after mixing with the resin. The board may have density 38À3- 41-1 Ib./ft.<SP>3</SP>. The board may contain 7-10% solid resin by weight of dry wood, and 1 % paraffin wax.
