Abstract
1,272,846. Moulding wood-resin articles; laminates. AVM CORP. 12 March, 1969, No. 13068/69. Headings B5A and B5N. A coated wood-resin article exhibiting a uniform finish is hot compression moulded from a pre-formed wood-resin core and overlying sheets of resin impregnated paper, smaller sheets being located over areas where the core exhibits greater shrinkage following its forming so as to compensate for this. In the particular embodiment a core 10 is covered by layers 11 of phenolic resin impregnated paper, a resin-free patterned paper layer 12 and an outer layer 13 of thin paper impregnated with melamine resin. The assembly is sandwiched between a silicone paper release sheet 14 and a cushion sheet 15 of Kraft paper and moulded under heat and pressure in a suitably shaped mould. The resin from the layers 11 faces and bonds the layers 11 together and to the core, whilst the resin in layer 13 faces, impregnates the patterned layer 12, bonds it to the layers 11, and renders the layer 13 transparent. Small phenolic resin sheets 11a are located at the regions of greatest shrinkage of the core.
